Brendan Fraser, once one of Hollywood’s finest, went through a very tough time, only to return triumphantly as an Oscar winner for Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. Since then, Fraser has once again been active in the industry, but his issues with confidence seem to persist.

Brendan Fraser most recently starred in Hikari’s Rental Family, where he played a struggling actor. The film has received critical acclaim, and once again, Fraser seems to be at the center of all the attention. But it seems that stepping into the boots of a struggling actor shook something inside Fraser, who told AP in a recent interview, “Don’t get too comfortable. It can happen to me.”
The 56-year-old went on to admit that he was not over his confidence issues despite his success in recent years. “I struggle with confidence,” Fraser said, “I always have the feeling of not being good enough. Believe me, no one can be harder on me than me. No critic, no pithy internet comment can be more biting to me than myself in my private thoughts.”
What Fraser achieved in his comeback is no mean feat. He won the coveted Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Whale, but it was not enough to shake off the issues plaguing him. “Honestly, I was kind of floating during that whole time without an agent,” he said about his Oscar win, “I was looking for that unicorn project that hadn’t been made into oblivion. I ended up: What is a rental family? Which dog do you like at the pound? I like the one with four teeth and one tweaky eye.”
But Brendan Fraser claimed that Hikari gave him something that was both distinct and much-needed. He said Hikari “gave me the opportunity to kind of dovetail from whatever happens in the vacuum after you experience a recognition like that.”
Fraser further claimed in the interview that going to Japan and immersing himself in that culture was something he absolutely needed.
Rental Family is now playing in theaters.
