Meghan Markle is calling around hospitals in the Philippines after her father’s leg was amputated in emergency life-saving surgery, it has been reported. The Duchess of Sussex has made desperate attempts to contact her estranged father, who she has reportedly not spoken to since 2018, after he was rushed into surgery earlier this week. Meghan insisted that she had reached out to Thomas, 81, after he went under the knife in a three-hour operation due to a “life-threatening emergency”.
However, her attempts to get in touch have been hampered by the fact that she doesn’t have his phone number, a source told The Sun, leaving her no choice but to call around hospitals in the Asian country in the hopes of tracking him down. Thomas’s condition was disclosed by his son, Thomas Jr, who said his father’s “foot turned blue then black” and he was rushed to a nearby hospital before learning that “the leg had to be amputated”.
“There was no option,” he told the Daily Mail. “I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death.”
Speaking to the editor of the Mail on Sunday from his hospital bed, the 81-year-old said he was “open to reconciling” with Meghan and “have never stopped loving her”.
“Of course I want to speak to her, but I am not sure if these are the right circumstances,” he added. “I don’t want to die estranged from Meghan. I want to meet my grandkids. It might be nice to meet her husband too.”
The Duchess used to have a close relationship with her father, but the pair seemingly cut ties around the time of her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.
Thomas was supposed to give Meghan away during the ceremony at St George’s Chapel but tensions rose when he was caught staging paparazzi shots of himself preparing for the wedding in exchange for cash.
He said he had chosen not to attend after the fallout from the scandal left him looking “stupid and hammy”, while the Palace blamed his absence on suffering a heart attack.
In Meghan and Harry’s 2021 TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess opened up for the first time about her strained relationship with him. “I grieve a lot,” she said during the explosive sit-down. “I mean, I’ve lost my father.”
