Prince Harry has been mostly supportive of Meghan Markle, but there was one time he was forced to intervene after his wife made a “disrespectful” joke about the late Queen Elizabeth.
The couple sent shockwaves around the world when they released their bombshell Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan. The show – which first aired three years ago today on December 8, 2022 – saw Harry and Meghan open up about what life inside the royal family was really like for them.
In the program, Meghan recalled meeting Harry’s grandmother for the first time. She performed an exaggerated curtsey as she spoke about the “surreal” moment, but Harry remained silent.
To mark the anniversary of the show’s release, body language expert Judi James has taken a look back at the awkward moment and suggested Meghan’s joke is now “especially shocking,” given that Meghan’s Duchess of Sussex title reportedly gets announced before she enters a room.
James also suggested Harry seemed uncomfortable during the exchange and said he seemed to be “embarrassed” by his wife’s comments.
Meghan started her story by comparing her first encounter with Queen Elizabeth to a dinner at Medieval Times. Speaking to the Daily Mail, James pointed out how Meghan held her hand up to Harry in what the expert described as a signal of “exclusion.”
Meghan then began her story by saying, “Americans will understand this…”
James said the only other time Meghan acknowledged Harry during the exchange was when she gave him an “immature, girlish side-eye,” suggesting she knew she was being “childish.”
The Duchess of Sussex recalled how she met Queen Elizabeth for lunch at Royal Lodge, shortly after her relationship with Harry was made public.
Meghan said the meeting felt like going for a dinner at Medieval Times, a theater event which features staged medieval-style games, sword-fighting and jousting.
She said she didn’t know she would be meeting Elizabeth until “moments before” it happened when Harry asked if she knew how to curtsey.
Commenting on Meghan’s tale, James said, “Her mocking tone begins when she shares that ‘I just thought it was a joke…right?’ to imply royal protocol is comedy rather than part of the culture of the country.”
Harry remained straight-faced when Meghan then performed a deep curtsey. James pointed out how Meghan’s voice became extremely high-pitched as she recalled saying, “Pleasure to meet you, Your Majesty.”
The body language expert claimed this was Meghan trying to “summon the mind’s eye image of the late Queen being on the receiving end of this mimicry.”
