Viola Davis cried over Golden Globes award: ‘Incredibly grateful’

Viola Davis tells USA TODAY’s Ralphie Aversa how she reacted to receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award, a Golden Globes lifetime achievement honor.

Rhode Island’s own Viola Davis is adding novelist to her bio.

The acclaimed actor is partnering with bestselling author James Patterson on a new courtroom drama novel “Judge Stone,” out March 9 from Little, Brown and Company. USA TODAY is bringing readers an exclusive first look at the cover.

“I am beyond excited to partner with the legendary James Patterson on our novel. James’ ability to weave compelling narratives with depth and suspense is unparalleled, and I am honored to work alongside him,” Davis told USA TODAY in a statement. “Writing about a character as compelling as Judge Mary Stone has been an extraordinary experience, and I believe readers will be deeply moved by her journey. This collaboration is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to share the fruits of our creative synergy with the world.”

The latest from the Central Falls native

A Central Falls native, Davis has been open about the struggles of her childhood. In her 2022 memoir, “Finding Me,” she wrote about experiencing poverty and abuse as one of six children.

The audiobook recording of her memoir won Davis the Grammy that clinched her EGOT, the acronym used for the select few entertainers who have won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

In “Judge Stone,” the star-studded author duo pen a protagonist their publisher calls “the most unforgettable character in years.” It follows Judge Mary Stone, family farmer and courtroom judge, the most respected citizen of the small town Union Springs, Alabama. Then she draws the most controversial case in the history of the South, seemingly open-and-shut but in reality a choice between life and death. Can she bring justice to the people and the place she loves?

In a statement, David Shelley, CEO of Hachette Book Group, calls the collaboration a “unique” one between “two remarkable creative forces.” Sally Kim, publisher of Little, Brown and Company, says “Judge Stone” is an “unforgettable” story “with characters that you root for and ideas that challenge you and leave you forever changed.”

Patterson, who has collaborated on novels with everyone from Dolly Parton to former President Bill Clinton, says he’s “long admired” Davis as an actress, producer and writer.

“Her memoir, ‘Finding Me,’ was among the most insightful and uplifting I’ve ever read,” Patterson told USA TODAY in a statement. “Her gift of storytelling in film and beyond, as well as her generous spirit, is without peer. And there has rarely been a more important time to spotlight the subjects raised in this novel. I could not have asked for a better partner than Viola.”

“Judge Stone” will be published in hardcover, e-book and audiobook in association with Davis’ media company JVL Media. It’s available to preorder now wherever books are sold.
