Meghan Markle’s strained relationship with her dad made headlines following his terrifying hospital dash last week, but things between the pair haven’t always been so bad.
Thomas Markle underwent emergency surgery in the Philippines and had to have his leg amputated below the knee after a blood clot blocked circulation to the limb.
It’s believed the Duchess of Sussex is trying to get in contact with her father and end their estrangement amid his health woes. Meghan’s potential contact with her dad could see their relationship return to what it once was as the former Suits actress once wrote a gushing tribute to her father.
In a post on her now-defunct lifestyle blog The Tig, Meghan praised Thomas for being a “thoughtful, inspiring, hardworking Daddy.”
The post, which was written more than a decade ago, saw Meghan credit her dad for helping her to “find my light” as he nurtured her passion for acting.
Meghan recalled how her dad would always drive her to dance classes, despite working more than 70 hours a week as a Hollywood lighting director. She also said Thomas insisted on “lighting my high school musicals so that they felt as grand as a Broadway show.”
“The blood, sweat and tears this man (who came from so little in a small town of Pennsylvania, where Christmas stockings were filled with oranges, and dinners were potatoes and spam) invested in my future so that I could grow up to have so much,” Meghan wrote.
The Duchess of Sussex shared the gushing post on Father’s Day more than 10 years ago, but it’s been recirculating amid questions about whether Meghan has reached out to her father following his hospitalization.
A source has suggested the Duchess of Sussex has made “progress” in trying to contact her dad. Speaking to GB News, the source said there had not been any direct contact between the pair as of Monday night, but added that it is “hoped and expected that there will be some form of communication in the next 24 hours.”
Meghan and her dad have been estranged for years, with their relationship breaking down shortly before the former Suits actress married Prince Harry in 2018.
Thomas had been caught before the royal wedding staging photographs with the paparazzi. He then withdrew from attending the ceremony due to health complications, meaning the then-Prince Charles had to step in to walk Meghan down the aisle.
Meghan and her dad have since had limited communication, with Thomas having never met his son-in-law or his two grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
