Free Truro play revisits 1970s 'porno chic' Dec. 20

The Truro Playwright Collective and Truro Public Library will present a staged reading of “How Do You Like Your Love?” at 2 p.m. Dec. 20 at the library, 7 Standish Way, North Truro. Admission is free, according to a community announcement.

The play, written by Racine Oxtoby, explores the cultural shift of the 1970s when pornography films entered mainstream cinema with the “porno chic” phenomenon. In 1972, one small-town cinema decides to screen the movie “Deep Throat,” creating quite a stir for the townspeople, as well as the cinema staff.

“How Do You Like Your Love?” follows four employees of the Rialto Cinema on the night of the “Deep Throat” premiere. The characters include the projectionist, the owner, the box office manager and the new kid. According to the announcement, they deal with flighty town bureaucracy, aggressive protesters, a full and rowdy audience, and their own personal conflicts.

Admission is free. For more information, call 508-487-1125 or email [email protected] or visit www.trurolibrary.org.

Oxtoby, a lifelong Truro resident, has a history of writing plays based on historical events. Her previous works include “Lara: A Love Story,” which premiered last year through the Truro Playwright Collective, was about the affair between Boris Pasternak and Olga Ivinskaya. Oxtoby also wrote “Fun Times in Babylon,” which focused on the Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle manslaughter trials and premiered as a staged reading at the Provincetown Theater in 2023.

In addition to her work as a playwright, Oxtoby is an actress who has appeared in productions such as “Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol,” “Almost, Maine,” and “Casa Valentina” at the Provincetown Theater. She also serves as the outreach coordinator at the Wellfleet Public Library.

The staged reading of “How Do You Like Your Love?” is the third installment of the Truro Playwright Collective’s winter season.

The next event in the series is scheduled for Jan. 17, featuring John Dennis Anderson (“Gellhorn v. Hemingway In Love and War”). Future readings include Fermin Rojas (TBD) on Feb. 21, Meryl Cohn (TBD) on March 21, and Linda Fiorella (TBD) on April 18.

The Truro Playwright Collective comprises seven established playwrights from the Outer Cape. The group presents free staged readings of full-length works once a month at the Truro Public Library. The collective was founded and is curated by playwright and North Truro resident Joseph M. Paprzycki. For more information, visit www.truroplaywrightcollective.org.
