Srijit Mukherji’s latest film Lawho Gouranger Naam Rey, though a study in social and spiritual inheritance, is also remarkable for its music, which, through its deeply evocative and emotional qualities, reinforces the central themes of the film. The film’s songs, which span across its three different timelines, elevate the action while echoing the minds and moods of its protagonists, guiding the narrative and acting as a pulse of its own era.
Bawshontokaal, a song from Lawho Gouranger Naam Rey, which was dropped on Sunday, is from the film’s contemporary timeline. While the songs from the other two timelines mainly focus on spiritual and devotional aspects, this song is a romantic number that portrays the relationship between a filmmaker, Rai (Ishaa Saha), and the lead actor in her film, Parthasarathi (Indraneil Sengupta). Contrasting with the deeply emotional and sometimes sombre tone of the other tracks in the film, Bawshontokaal is a soft and light-hearted love song with catchy lyrics and soothing vocals. In the song, Bawshontokaal, or the season of spring, symbolises the awakening of love and the excitement of new beginnings as well as the promise of eternal love and youthfulness. Sung in the fresh, happy and energetic voices of Antara Nandy and Sutirtha Chakraborty, the song has a modern vibe that resonates with listeners and adds to its intimacy and direct appeal.
Creating a positive, uplifting, or even introspective mood, the music video of Bawshontokaal explores the different facets of the romantic relationship of the two characters, tracing its development and, at the same time, highlighting Parthasarathi’s relationship with another woman (Susmita Chatterjee). A fun yet intriguing element is added to the video in a scene where Rai can be seen gesturing to Parthasarathi, who is surrounded by fans, perhaps asking him for an autograph. Visible in the background is a film poster featuring superstar Parthasarathi Chatterjee and his co-star Poorna Aich, the latter a main character in Mukherji’s April 2025 film Killbill Society, portrayed by Koushani Mukherjee.
Lawho Gouranger Naam Rey, also starring Subhashree Ganguly, Dibyajyoti Dutta, Bratya Basu and others in key roles, is currently running in theatres.
