Local arts-scene veteran Corbin Murdoch has been named the new executive director of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.

In announcing the decision, the fest praised his experience running non-profits, as well as his reputation for programming, team building, budget management, and ability to secure partnerships that elevate the reach and impact of arts groups. Most recently serving as the executive director of the Dawson City Music Festival, Murdoch’s resume includes time spent with Theatre Replacement and the Cultch in Vancouver.

“I am honoured to lead VFMF as it embarks on its next chapter and prepares for its 49th festival,” Murdoch said in a release. “My goal is to carry forward its legacy as a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable cultural hub to present folk and roots music for years to come.”

One of Vancouver’s longest-running cultural events, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival survived a rough patch as the world was emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. In January of 2023, the fest issued a statement that started with, “It is with great sadness that we announce that the 2023 Vancouver Folk Music Festival has been cancelled, as the VFMF Society simply does not have the resources to produce an event this year.”

Following a massive public outcry, community organizers rallied, leading to the festival’s return for a 46th year that July. The team since then has included respected Vancouver music-scene veteran Fiona Black as artistic director,  with whom Murdoch will work closely in his new role.

In announcing Murdoch’s appointment, VFMF board president said, “Corbin is passionate about live music and the power of festivals to bring people together across generations, cultures, and walks of life, which aligns perfectly with VFMF’s rich history of welcoming thousands of festival-goers each summer for a weekend of music, community, and celebration.”

The 49th Vancouver Folk Music Festival will take place July 17-19 next year at Jericho Beach Park.
