POTSDAM — SLC Arts is pleased to announce a special community session for the upcoming public art mural, “Royals of the Raquette,” to be designed by North Country artist Liza L. L. Paige. The event will be held on Tuesday, January 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Creative Spirit Community Arts Center, located at 6 Raymond Street in Potsdam.
This free, all-ages gathering invites community members to learn about the mural, participate in hands-on art activities, and contribute personal stories that will become part of the final artwork.
During the session, attendees will:
- Hear a project presentation from mural artist Liza L. L. Paige
- Learn about local bird species from Tom Langen, a regional bird expert
- Create bird feeders and craft Loon collages
- Share personal bird stories to be uniquely incorporated into the mural’s design
The mural, inspired by the native species of the Raquette River, will be painted on the Potsdam Water Treatment Plant along the Riverwalk, a pathway developed through the Potsdam Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). This installation will contribute to an emerging arts walk that highlights creative expression and community engagement.
Initial mural development has been made possible through Van Ness Family Funds at the Northern New York Community Foundation. SLC Arts is currently seeking additional funding to bridge the financial gap and ensure that “Royals of the Raquette” is completed with the highest level of artistic quality.
“We are grateful for the partnership and vision that is helping shape a unique arts walk along the Raquette,” said Erica Kelso, SLC Arts. “This mural celebrates the natural life of our river, and we hope the community will join us in shaping its story.”
Artist Liza L. L. Paige has completed numerous public murals across the North Country and is widely recognized for her striking large-scale charcoal drawings. Her work often explores natural themes, regional identity, and community storytelling.
This community session is free and open to all ages. No registration is required.
