Victoria Beckham showed Meghan Markle up as she appeared on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live alongside Kerry Washington. Host Andy asked Victoria to “clear up” her title for him, as he asked whether it was right that she and husband David Beckham were Sir and Lady Beckham. Victoria replied: “That’s right, I am Lady Beckham.”
Andy then cheekily replied: “Lady Posh?” to which Victoria responded: “You can call me whatever you want! Anything for you.”
This is in sharp contrast to Meghan, who was called out by a Harper’s Bazaar writer, who claimed Meghan was announced as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,” as she walked into the room, despite there being only two other people in the house.
Myka Meier, an etiquette expert, explained that while Meghan is entitled to be introduced using her title, the correct etiquette is for the guest to be introduced, implying that Meghan was just looking to show off her title to a prestigious magazine.
Put that together with pictures of gifts Meghan has sent various celebrities of her As Ever products being monikered with her title, and you can see the vast difference between Victoria and Meghan.
The disparity between how the two stars deal with their different titles proves exactly why Victoria is one of the UK’s most revered celebrities, and why Meghan is one of the most unpopular. She keeps making the mistake of not reading the room. She wasn’t worried about the hierarchy of royal titles when she was walking in front of the Queen and slamming Princess Kate was she? Her love of using her title just comes across as a money-making scheme, which flies in the face of what a lot of people in the UK hold dear.
British people are known for their humility and self-deprecation, and it never goes well for people to be seen as bragging or taking themselves too seriously. One of the biggest complaints about Meghan’s Netflix show is that Meghan tries desperately to be relatable by talking about how she tries to juggle homemaking, motherhood and her business, but while standing in a multi-million dollar LA mansion with a number of different celebrities.
It will just never land with British viewers, especially since everyone is fed up of Meghan and Harry constantly promoting their titles despite no longer doing any notable work for the Royal Family. Who can remember how quick Meghan was to remind Mindy Kaling “it’s Sussex now” after the actress referred to her as Markle? And with Harry still fighting for taxpayers to pay for his family’s security when he comes to the UK, the pair come across as two people just not living in reality.
Meanwhile, David and Victoria are the complete opposite, with David even taking care to call out his wife Victoria for calling herself “working class”, landing him a nomination for a Memorable Moment in the TV BAFTA category. It showed the pair as people who weren’t worried about their image, but more about being authentic and honest with viewers.
Both David and Victoria have been described by friends as being humble and up for a laugh, something which I have never heard anyone call Harry and Meghan on the record.
If Meghan has any sense, she would hold back on using her Duchess title, especially if she and Harry still have any hope of returning to the UK. After years of slamming the royal family but reaping the rewards of her title, Meghan has got a lot of explaining to do, and Victoria Beckham has been the person to truly show her up.
