Pianist honored

Northwest Arkansas piano teacher Tomoko Kashiwagi has been inducted into the Steinway & Sons Music Teacher Hall of Fame, which recognizes “the work of North America’s most committed and passionate piano educators,” according to a news release.

Kashiwagi is the Emily J. McAllister Endowed Associate Professor of Piano and Collaborative Piano and associate chair of the music department at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She is also the artistic director of the Ozark Music Initiative, a nonprofit “creating year-round educational opportunities to empower young musicians and enrich the cultural life of Northwest Arkansas through world-class performances,” according to the release.

She is one of 66 music teachers from the United States and Canada who has been inducted into the Music Teacher Hall of Fame. “Teachers were selected for this award for their outstanding instruction and leadership in acoustic piano education and their commitment to teaching in their community for over a decade,” the release notes. Her nomination came from Steinway Gallery Northwest Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Kashiwagi was the inaugural recipient of the doctor of musical arts degree in collaborative piano from the University of Texas at Austin and holds a performer diploma in piano performance from Indiana University.

She has performed extensively throughout the United States and abroad, including Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Japan, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Panama, Brazil and Canada. She has been the official pianist for conferences, competitions and festivals, including the Menuhin International Violin Competition in 2014 and the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in 2019.
