“We made this song last year in the wake of a school shooting,” Abrams, Dessner and Vernon wrote on Instagram. “I was reminded of it this week as our hearts were broken yet again. It’s a sad one to share during the holidays, but the world is hurting and we shouldn’t look away. We are proud to support @everytown, an organization dedicated to ending gun violence in America. We are releasing this song to raise awareness of their mission of reducing gun violence. Please visit their website for more information on the unbelievable work they do. Sending so much love to you all.”

The song, which can be bought on Bandcamp for $5, features Abrams singing, “Hiding from a gun inside your high school / Just another Tuesday, normal, old news / Someone spilled their blood on Molly’s white shoes / Someone called their mother from the bathroom.”

She then goes on to sing about “the men in suit and ties” with “their empty words and thoughts and prayers while the country burns.”

“They collect a check in pride and the system works and we all stay terrified,” she sings.

In the chorus, Abrams sings, “What are we doing here / Think we got sold out / Looks like another year without a way out.”

The singers wrote on Instagram that they support Everytown for Gun Safety, an organization that advocates for gun control. President John Feinblatt said in a comment to celebrity.land that the organization is grateful for the song.

“When it comes to solving America’s gun violence crisis, changing laws isn’t enough — we also need to change the culture, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with help from artists like Gracie Abrams,” Feinblatt said. “Everytown couldn’t be more grateful to Gracie Abrams, Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner for this powerful reminder of the cost we all pay when lawmakers sell out to the gun industry.”

According to Everytown, there have been 159 incidents of gun violence on campuses in America this year, resulting in 53 deaths and 148 injuries.

Abrams has been politically outspoken since she came onto the scene in 2020, telling a publication, “I can’t separate my music from my opinions.”

“It’s a whole that reflects my way of thinking,” she said. “You shouldn’t be afraid to talk about what you believe in. I find that very important.”

She has been vocal about abortion rights, demanding a ceasefire to the war in Gaza and performed at a Kamala Harris presidential rally in 2024.
