Manilow, 82, told fans how his “wonderful” doctor ordered him to get an MRI just to “make sure that everything was OK” after he recovered from a six-week bout of bronchitis.
The scan turned out to be a potential lifesaver for the veteran chart-topper, who revealed that the MRI “discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed.”
“It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early,” he added. “That’s the good news.” The “bad news,” however, was that Manilow would have to cancel a slate of January concerts to undergo surgery and recover.
But overall, the star said his prognosis was good, sharing, “The doctors do not believe it was spread and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis. So, that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.”
He apologized for having to reschedule his January shows but promised his legion of Fan-ilows that he’d be in tip-top shape when he returns to his residency at his “home away from home,” the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, come Valentine’s Day weekend.
Keeping up the optimism, Manilow said, “Something tells me that February weekend is going to be one big party.”
