Tributes have been paid to Bart Story, a long-serving entertainment research executive whose behind-the-scenes work influenced marketing strategies for hundreds of major film and television releases. Story died in Los Angeles on Tuesday at the age of 63 from complications related to metastatic urothelial carcinoma, his family confirmed.
Colleagues remembered him not only for his professional impact, but for the way he worked with people Jeremy Radisich, president of entertainment at MarketCast, where Story spent much of his career, said: “Across his two-decade career with MarketCast, Bart helped hundreds of movies achieve success, meaningfully connecting with thousands of clients, focus group respondents and teammates along the way.
“His work was characterised by a thoughtful and gentle approach that made him not only an excellent collaborator and partner, but an incredible person who made an impact on everyone he met.”
Story devoted more than 30 years to helping studios, networks and streaming platforms better understand audiences and shape their creative and marketing decisions. He joined MarketCast in 2003 and served as senior director until July, advising clients on creative testing, audience insight and positioning strategies.
Earlier in his career, he worked as director of research at the Video Software Dealers Association from 1995 to 1996, and later held the same role at the Screen Actors Guild between 1996 and 2001.
His professional journey began in movie theatres before he pursued formal studies, earning a bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly Pomona in 1985 and a master’s degree from USC’s Annenberg School three years later.
Story is survived by his husband, Patrick Jager, and their son, Brandt. A private celebration of life will be held.
