At 8.55 p.m., Bach Dang pedestrian street along the Han River, Da Nang City, was packed with people. Residents and tourists, from the elderly to children, jostled as they strolled and took photos. On the river, cruise boats were busy ferrying visitors on sightseeing trips. Long queues formed outside a popular café, with many people waiting to buy their favourite drink.
Ngoc Hien, a second-year student at Duy Tan University, said that ahead of the New Year she rode her motorbike 30km from home to the central Han River area at 6 p.m., sitting at a riverside café to wait for some friends to join her in welcoming the New Year.
“In the new year, I wish for good health, peace for my family, stable income and better academic progress,” Hien shared, adding that she would celebrate New Year’s Eve with friends and stay at her rented room, returning to her hometown the next day.
