Queen Camilla’s son, Tom Parker Bowles, thinks there would be civil unrest in the UK if he were to ever take on a royal title.
The Queen’s son, 51, appeared on an October 21 episode of the Good Food podcast with Samuel Goldsmith where the topic turned to whether he’d consider adopting a royal title. Tom, who is a restaurant critic for The Mail on Sunday, joked that he doesn’t believe the people would stand for it if a man of his stature was elevated to the level of a royal.
“I’d tell you that would be the quickest way to revolution,” Tom joked, per People. “I think we’re fairly balanced and sober and sensible country on the whole, but if I suddenly became prince, I think Buckingham Palace gates would be stormed. It would be appalling. Really, no… I think that would put back the long and glorious cause of the monarchy in Britain by many years, no.”
Unlike his stepbrothers, Prince William and Prince Harry, Tom and his sister, Laura Lopes, do not carry royal titles. The pair are Queen Camilla’s kids from her first marriage to Andrew Parker Bowles. Though she would go on to marry the then-Prince Charles in 2005, thus making their kids members of the royal family, it seems neither Tom nor Laura have much interest in adopting the royal lifestyle any time soon.
However, that doesn’t mean they’re devoid of any royal duties. The outlet reports that Tom and Laura both attended Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral in September of 2022 as well as the coronation of their stepfather, King Charles, in May 2023.
At the time of the coronation, Tom defended people who were protesting the event, arguing that it was simply an exercise of their free speech.
“We live in, thankfully, a free country,” he said during an interview with The News Agents.
“If people want to protest, that’s their right to do so, I think. If people protest, people protest. You’re allowed to protest, we’re all allowed to have different views. I think that makes for an interesting and civilized country,” he concluded.
