Jessie Buckley looks like a shoo-in for an Oscar after scooping the Best Actress gong at the Critics Choice Awards, while Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner got tongues wagging with their declaration of love
Jessie Buckley wins best actress at Critics Choice Awards
After the lull of Twixmas, the return to work blues, and a bleak news cycle, many of us may well welcome a glittery break from reality. Right on cue comes the beginning of Hollywood’s awards season. A time of year filled with squillion dollar frocks, relentless movie promotion, and fierce speculation about plastic surgery. We also hear about the mysterious spoils inside the Oscars goodie bags (last year’s swag included luxury ‘dog wear’, and a personalised backgammon set). On Sunday night, awards season kicked off with the Critics Choice Awards, taking place in Santa Monica. From Jessie Buckley doing us proud to celebrity cosplaying, here are the highlights of the evening.
Jessie Buckley is the frontrunner to pick up the Best Actress award for her performance in Maggie O’Farrell’s historical drama Hamnet at the 2026 Oscars. It would be a historic win as she would become the first Irish woman to do so, although let’s not forget that Brenda Fricker scooped the Best Supporting Oscar gong in 1990. And Buckley is already off to a strong start after being awarded the Best Actress at the Critics Choice. In her acceptance speech, she was full of praise for her fellow nominees, director Chloé Zhao, and her co-star Paul Mescal. “Paul, I bloody love you, man,” she said from the stage. “And I know loads of other women do in this room too, but tough sh**. I could drink you like water working with you every single day. You’re a giant of the heart and thank you so much for making me a little more human.” Mark my words, that Oscar statuette has Jessie’s name all over it.
