Deezer made waves last year with its regular updates on how much of the new music being uploaded to its service was fully AI-generated. At the last count, in November, it was 34% of all uploads. Now it’s time for China’s streaming ecosystem to enter the chat.
An article on state-owned outlet People’s Daily about AI opening “new horizons for China’s music industry” thoroughly buries its lede towards the bottom of the piece.
“According to statistics, AI-generated works accounted for 56.9 percent of independently released new songs in China during the first quarter of 2025,” it claimed.
In the west, Deezer’s figures have been seen as a cause for concern. But it’s notable that in People Daily – which will inevitably be taken as reflection of official views within the Chinese authorities – they’re not presented as a sky-falling-in trend.
In fact, the article presents AI as a positive thing for China’s music industry, even when noting that Tencent Music’s GenAI music tool has been used by more than 10 million people, creating more than 26m tracks that have collectively been streamed more than 1bn times.
