TOPEKA (KSNT) — As the Kansas City Chiefs move into The Sunflower State, many were left wondering if the Royals would join them. Now, we may have the answer.
During a press event at the Kansas State Capitol Building, Kansas House Speaker confirmed with us that Kansas officials will no longer be pursuing the Royals.
Back in 2024, the Kansas legislature offered a stadium deal to both the Chiefs and the Royals. If accepted, the state would use STAR bonds to pay for up to 70% of construction costs for a new stadium in Kansas.

The teams had until Dec. 31st to accept the offer, which the Chiefs did exactly two weeks ago.
However, the Royals let the deadline pass. House Speaker Hawkins tells us; the legislature does not intend on extending that offer.
“We put an end to it on December 31st,” said Hawkins. “Believe me, I was not kidding when I said that.”
He tells us, with the Chiefs new stadium and other new recent developments, he’s happy with the progress The Sunflower State has made with or without the Royals.

We’ve gotten a speedway that’s been paid off, we have the whole legends area that never would’ve happened,” said Hawkins. “Look at all the money that has come out of that now.”
The STAR bond program that Kansas used to offer these stadium deals is set to expire this year, however lawmakers have expressed interest in extending the program.
