The transformation of the former Carraway Methodist Medical Center campus continues, with plans underway to convert the former emergency room into a new indoor entertainment venue near downtown Birmingham.

New indoor entertainment venue
The indoor venue will be part of the broader redevelopment of the 45-acre Carraway site, which is now home to the Coca-Cola Amphitheater, welcoming more than 174,000 fans since June, and nearly 30 live shows in its first year.
While specific details about the entertainment concept have not yet been released, construction on the indoor venue and renovation of the former emergency room space is expected to begin in June or July.
Redevelopment plans continue
Before that work can start, demolition of select portions of the former hospital must be completed. According to an interview with Brian Wolfe courtesy of AL.com, demolition work is required to wrap up by May 30, with all rubble removed and former basement areas backfilled.
Residential development is also planned for the site as part of the highly anticipated Star Uptown project. Construction on new cottages and townhomes along Carraway Boulevard is expected to begin in early 2026.
Overall redevelopment of the former Carraway campus is expected to take between five and seven years, with multiple projects launching in phases throughout 2026 helping set the stage for continued growth at the historic site.
