The Princess of Wales celebrates her birthday today, with Kate turning 44, almost a year to the day since she revealed she was in remission from cancer

The Princess of Wales celebrates her 44th birthday today – almost a year to the day since she announced she was in remission from cancer. Since her diagnosis in early 2024, Kate has endured chemotherapy treatment – a period Prince William described as ‘brutal’ – before making a slow and gradual return to royal duties.

As she celebrates her big day, the princess can look back on the past 12 months as a time when she has opened up more about her ‘life-changing’ health challenge, revealing how nature has been her sanctuary and how she has adjusted to finding a “new normal”.

Despite her phased return to work in 2025, Kate has cemented her key role within the monarchy, from wooing Donald Trump during his state visit to the UK in September to leading the nation during a poignant service at the National Memorial Arboretum on Armistice Day.

But even though her schedule for 2026 might be filling up as the mum-of-three marks her birthday, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond says something else – just as important – is her number one focus.

She told the Mirror : “Life for the Princess is definitely more settled after the past extremely difficult couple of years. The family is in a new home, and she is now in remission. So I’m sure she’ll be looking forward to the coming year with renewed vigour and that her diary will be filling up.

“But, for the foreseeable future, there is no doubt that nurturing her children and being a mum on the school run as often as possible is going to remain her priority.”

Kate kicked off her working year on Thursday by praising the “amazing work” of the NHS as she made a surprise appearance on a visit to a hospital in London. The princess accompanied William, who was originally due to attend solo, at Charing Cross Hospital for their first public engagement of 2026, where they met healthcare workers and discussed the pressures faced during the winter virus season.

However, today, Kate is expected to mark her birthday privately at home, surrounded by William and their three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and seven-year-old Prince Louis.

But she did give a nod to her special day today by opening up on how she has spent winter reflecting on how “deeply grateful” she is. In the final instalment of Kensington Palace’s quarterly Mother Nature series, which Kate appears in and narrates, she said the cold season has a way of bringing “stillness, patience and quiet consideration”.

The princess launched the series in spring as a celebration of the changing seasons across the UK. In the winter edition released today, she said: “Even in the coldest, darkest season, winter has a way of bringing us stillness, patience and quiet consideration. Where the stream slows just enough for us to see our own reflection. To discover the deepest parts of ourselves. Alongside the whispers in the pulse of every living thing.

“I find myself reflecting on how deeply grateful I am. For the rivers within us flow with ease, fears washed away, cleanse and purify. Come to peace with our tears and discover what it means to be alive. To be at one with nature; a quiet teacher and a soft voice that guides. In memory. Helping us to heal.”

The video was accompanied by a personal post signed with a C, which read: “The Mother Nature series has been a deeply personal, creative reflection on how nature has helped me heal. But it is also a story about the power of nature and creativity in collective healing. There is so much we can learn from mother nature, as we look to build a happier, healthier world. C.”

And given her several declarations of how nature has been important during her cancer journey, when it comes to birthday wishes, Jennie believes there will be just on thing Kate will truly be wanting. She explained: “Like most young women, I’m sure Catherine has often enjoyed being made to feel special on her birthday, with a touch of luxury never going amiss.

“However, I think two things have changed her. One is of course, marrying into the royal family, a family of untold wealth: in all honesty, she could have anything she wants.

“But, more profoundly, her cancer diagnosis has made her re-assess all that is important in life. She is on record as saying that it has been a life-changing experience. She has had to find her ‘new normal’.

“And that new reality seems to be a re-evaluation of what is truly important. And, for Catherine, that is family, love, nature and simple gratitude.

“And so, on her birthday, I think she will want nothing other than to be surrounded by those she loves, her husband, her children, her parents and siblings — and to rejoice in being alive, healthy and at one with nature.”

However, if her family are keen to buy her a present, Jennie believes something that will allow her to indulge in some peace and quiet would not go amiss.

She added: “Among the usual chaos of family life, I suspect Catherine likes to create a little haven of tranquillity once the kids have gone to bed. We know she loves candles – she famously had Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom candles lit during her wedding at Westminster Abbey – so I’m sure she’d appreciate some for her birthday.”
