Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre audition dates for summer intensives

Each year, Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre brings celebrated dance companies to Baton Rouge to audition regional dancers for limited spots in their prestigious programs. Summer intensives provide dancers with an opportunity to study under some of the most renowned dance instructors in the country.

This year, auditions will consist of four separate classes, each for one of the respective companies, spread out across the months of January and February.

Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre is welcoming the Nashville Ballet from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 11, Next Generation Ballet – Patel Conservatory from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 25, and Milwaukee Ballet from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 22. All auditions will be held at The NeuroMedical Center Studio at The Dancers’ Workshop on 10745 Linkwood Court, Baton Rouge.

Each company has specific audition requirements, and dancers are encouraged to find more information at batonrougeballet.org/national-auditions/.

Thriller authors to give book talk in St. Francisville

Course on the questions Jews asked across the ages

Baton Rouge will have a window and guided tour of a unique genre of Jewish literature in the new six-week course by Rabbi Peretz Kazen of Chabad at LSU & Greater Baton Rouge. Beginning Jan. 26, in-person at 11 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. on Zoom, participants will uncover 30 true stories captured in Captivating Cases in Rabbinic Responsa.

Imagine holding a handwritten letter presenting a 13th-century legal dilemma about a shipwrecked merchant; receiving a politically charged inquiry from a 16th-century monarch seeking legal justification to annul his marriage; hearing a life-or-death ethical question whispered under a guard’s watch in Auschwitz; or evaluating a modern inquiry regarding the ethical boundaries of AI in legal practice.

For more than 1,200 years, rabbis have adjudicated such real-world cases using legal reasoning — examining precedent, equity and evolving scientific knowledge. This course, developed by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, offers students a glimpse into how Jews have lived across the ages and the values they have held dear.

Captivating Cases in Rabbinic Responsa is approved as continuing legal education in the state of Louisiana.

Like all JLI programs, this course is designed to appeal to people at all levels of knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple or other house of worship.

Interested students may call (225) 267-7048 or visit ChabadBR.com/JLI for registration and other course-related information.
