Many of the Royal Family’s most famous moments happen on the palace balcony, though one surprising detail of their appearances often goes overlooked.
According to HELLO!, the royals have found a clever way to stay abreast of what’s going on at The Mall, as well as taking stock of their own images. They utilize television monitors to stay aware of the crowd’s reactions and ensure they present themselves perfectly during public appearances.
“They are placed in the corners of the balcony, slightly canted. The balustrade is covered in red fabric, so all the equipment can be hidden behind it,” a royal source told HELLO! of the hidden electronic devices.
The balcony, where the royal family appears to greet the public after events, is located in the East Wing of Buckingham Palace, according to The Royal Collection Trust. The wing includes the home’s front facade, as well as the Yellow Drawing Room, the Principal Corridor, and the Centre Room, which leads out to the balcony.

The Buckingham Palace balcony has been the place where royal watchers have seen the family greet the public after events such as Trooping the Color, royal weddings and state events. Those invited to stand on the balcony always include the monarch and their spouse, the first and second in line to the throne and their spouses, and their children.
Typically, only those who are official royal family members or who are engaged to be married into the clan can stand in the outdoor space. This long-established rule means no outsiders are invited.
According to Town & Country, it was Queen Victoria who began this royal tradition. She first stepped out to greet the public in 1851, following the wedding of her daughter, Princess Victoria.
Subsequently, the balcony has been the place where iconic royal moments have taken place, such as the first public kisses of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, and Prince William and Kate Middleton. The family also famously gathered there for Queen Elizabeth‘s Platinum Jubilee Celebration in 2022.
The last time the royal family stood outside to meet the public was in June 2025 for the annual Trooping the Color event. The clan waved greetings and watched the Royal Air Force flypast before retreating inside the palace.
