Sofia was scheduled to attend two events this week, but reportedly had to cancel to be by her sister’s side. One is taking place today at the Poema del Mar Aquarium in Palma de Mallorca, where the former Queen of Spain was set to collect an award for her long-standing commitment to biodiversity and conservation.
She was also going to be awarded an honorary doctorate at the University of Las Palmas’ Paraninfo, according to Hola! Magazine.
The outlet claimed Irene is “very fragile and her condition is critical”.
The two women, who are sisters to the late Constantine II, the last King of Greece, are said to be close to each other, with Irene staying in an apartment at Zarzuela Palace near her sibling since 1981.
Irene, who never married, was last publicly pictured in February 2025, when she, alongside the Spanish and Greek royal families, attended the wedding of her nephew, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, and Chrysi Vardinogiánni in Athens.
Sofia was last seen over the weekend attending the funeral of her cousin, Tatiana Radziwill, in Paris.
Her husband went on to live in self-imposed exile in Abu Dhabi following his abdication in 2014.
Juan Carlos was monarch between 1975 and 2014 and was praised for the country’s transition from dictatorship to democracy, after the death of General Francisco Franco.
Sofia remained in Spain to continue her duties to the crown.
