The Walking Dead Had Ryan Hurst and Still Didn’t Know What to Do With Him

The Walking Dead had Ryan Hurst, a performer known for raw physicality and quiet menace, yet the series often struggled to fully use what he brought to the screen. As Beta, Hurst delivered brute-force intimidation that immediately set the Whisperers apart, but repetitive storytelling gradually boxed the character into a narrow role.

Hurst joined the series in Season 9 as Beta, the towering second-in-command to Alpha, played by Samantha Morton. Standing 6’4″, wrapped in walker skin, Beta felt designed to haunt the screen. In both the comics and the television series, Beta is introduced as Alpha’s right-hand man and later becomes the de facto leader of the Whisperers after her death.
