Sonic Showcase

Three original audio pieces created by the 2025 Orbit Arts working theatre ensembles at Pelican Bay State Prison, in partnership with KHSU, are going to be presented as the “Orbit Arts Sonic Showcase: 3 Plays from Pelican Bay” Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Dell’Arte International, 131 H St. in Blue Lake.

Written, developed and performed by the participating artists at Pelican Bay, the pieces were produced in collaboration with KHSU’s Stephanie McGeary and local musician Cory Goldman, with facilitation by Orbit Arts Program Director Janessa Johnsrude. Tickets are offered by donation (cash or card) and can be purchased at the door.

Money raised will go toward funding a spring term of classes at Humboldt County Correctional Facility as part of Dell’Arte’s Orbit Arts Program, carrying on the work started in the fall working with a new cohort of women.

The pieces being presented originally aired on KHSU as part of the holiday season. The radio pieces are 15 minutes each and range in subject and style.

“Ro-Sham-Boom: Last Hand Standing” is a comedy short of a radio broadcast of the 10th annual Intergalactic Ro-Sham-Bo championships. It was written and performed by Orbit Artists from Pelican Bay’s D yard: Jermaine Brim, Nicholas Bates, John Purugganan, Jacob Carroll, Ruben Zarate, Alberto Ramirez, Genaro Garcia, Anthony Joseph Eidem and J.D. Donovan.

“Gumbo: An Audio Collage” follows Chef Foreign Waterz as he makes a pot of gumbo, which serves as a metaphor for collective belonging in a time of extreme divisions. It was written and performed by Orbit Artists from Pelican Bay’s A yard: Daniel Wilson, Juan Rubio, James Kern, Demone (Cleamon) Johnson, Delroy Espinoza, Jesse (Jesus) Contreras, Steven Mitchell and Christopher Hendrickson.

“From the Outside Looking In” is a meditation on the concept of identity with poems and thoughts from B-yard Orbit Artists at Pelican Bay. Interviews from and poems are by Orbit Artists from Pelican Bay’s B yard: Jose Avila, Adrian Calderon, Dejon Griffin, Michael Williams, Armando Canchola, Rene Lopez, Magic Knight, Manuel Rosas and Zachary F. Hurlburt Erhardt.
The event will take place in Dell’Arte’s main studio, which is up a flight of stairs and shoes are not allowed in the studio.

For more information, go to www.orbitartsprogram.com or www.dellarte.com.
