The title of this weekend’s Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra’s Masterworks concert is quite on the nose.

Symphonic Giants may be referring to the lineup of heavyweight composers like Antonín Dvořák, Camille Saint-Saëns and Johannes Brahms, but it also speaks to the volume of players on stage. The January concert has customarily featured a side-by-side performance with the Fargo-Moorhead Area Youth Symphony, adding extra string power to Dvořák’s Selections from “Slavonic Dances.”

As if dozens of pre-college musicians isn’t enough, Tyler Wottrich, professor of piano at North Dakota State University will showcase his skills on the keys during Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2.

The concerts will conclude with the grand Brahms Symphony No. 4.

Despite having five comedy albums to his name and a Dry Bar Comedy special, “A Third of the Room,” with over 1 million views on YouTube, Gabriel Rutledge may not yet be a household name. He’s on the road to change that and bringing his brand of stand-up to Sanctuary Events Center, Fargo. Marlin Wells opens the show.

Tickets are $31.50.

Ben Rheault is not afraid to tackle challenging concepts and topics in his work. In his 2020 solo show at The Rourke Art Gallery + Museum, sarcastically called “Everything is Fine,” he used text and symbols in stark black and white paintings to tee off on public safety, politics, socioeconomic status and the art world itself. He’s back at the Moorhead institution with a new show, “Sympathetic Resonances,” a look at human connectivity.

He’ll discuss the work at 2 p.m., Sunday, during a public opening that is free to the public.

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. For Doug Harbin it came from recordings of buzzing bees and fluttering butterflies. Harbin, professor of music theory and composition at Concordia College, unveils two of his works — “Wingbeat” and “Drones” — this Sunday evening as part of an evening of electroacoustic music. The event also features a talk with local pollinators as well as performances from cellist Eduard Teregulov and violinist Sonja Bosca-Harasim, concert master for the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra.

The music starts at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, in Christiansen Recital Hall, Hvidsten Hall of Music, Concordia College. The concert is free and open to the public.
