A woman who claimed to be the secret daughter of Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury has died. She was 48.
Her death was announced via her husband, who released a statement to the Daily Mail saying that she died “peacefully after a long battle with chordoma, a rare spinal cancer” and left behind “two sons aged nine and seven.”
“[She] is now with her beloved and loving father in the world of thoughts. Her ashes were scattered to the wind over the Alps,” the statement said.
The woman, who was only known as “B,” first came to light in the book “Love, Freddie” by Lesley Ann Jones, which was published last May.
B or “Bibi” said in the book that she was conceived in 1976 when Mercury had an affair with a wife of one of his friends.
“The circumstances of my birth may seem, by most people’s standards, unusual and even outrageous,” B was quoted as saying in the book. “That should come as no surprise. It never detracted from his commitment to love and look after me. He cherished me like a treasured possession.”
In its announcement of her death, the Daily Mail also revealed that Mercury referred to her as “Bibi” and had written the songs “Bijou” and “Don’t Try So Hard” about her. It said she had a close relationship with him until he died in 1991 due to complications from AIDS.
“I am devastated by the loss of this woman who became my close friend, who had come to me with a selfless aim: to brush aside all those who have had free rein with Freddie’s story for 32 years, to challenge their lies and their rewriting of his life, and to deliver the truth,“ Jones said in a statement to the Daily Mail. ”At the end of her life, it was all that mattered to her. She was very ill throughout the 4 years that we worked together. But she was on a mission. She put herself and her own needs last.”
