El Paso content creators interview movie, entertainment stars in Hollywood

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Without much forethought but driven by relentless motivation, three young content creators from El Paso took a five-day trip to Los Angeles and West Hollywood, capturing interviews with successful people in the movie and entertainment business as part of a motivational filming project.

“You throw a bunch of young 20-year-olds into creative projects? You end up with a lot of energy and excitement. So we kind of just ran into California just guns blazing and ready,” said Jasmine Powers, owner and creative director for Powers & Co. Creative Media.

Powers, Indy Gonzalez and Freddy Ronquillo made up the three-person crew that embarked on the filming project in LA.

They captured interviews with a range of talent that included Emmy award-winning producer and actor Sean Kanan (“Cobra Kai,” “The Karate Kid Part III,” “General Hospital”), Benedict Coulter – a renowned movie trailer editor for blockbuster films like “Top Gun” and “Gladiator” — as well as popular YouTube and Twitch influencer Antwain Terry.

Powers has developed a sizable following on her Instagram page over the past two years by creating motivational content that entails interviewing local talent and sharing their success stories.

For this project, however, Powers said she wanted to get out of her comfort zone and made the spontaneous decision to make the last-minute trip to California. She said both Gonzalez and Ronquillo readily supported the idea.

“We were constantly thinking, ‘What would be cool to produce?’ But at the end of the day, what I focus on are stories and interviews. So I just wanted to make sure the people we interviewed were worth watching and that their motivation actually stuck to the audience member. So what I knew was in California, you have actors, you have L.A., that’s everything you dream of as a creative. Going out there,” Powers said.

Powers said they secured the interviews merely by reaching out to people through social media and email, and without any pre-existing connections or agencies. She said they made some of that outreach after they already arrived in L.A.

“We saw the value that these people we were interviewing could provide us,” said Indy Gonzalez, who worked as a production assistant on the project. “They’ve been through the same route that we’re going through right now, just years before. And so not only was it a good opportunity for us to learn, but for us to highlight them. So that everybody else that watches it can take something from that.”

Powers said that for their next project, they are planning to embark on a similar project trip to Austin.

For now, they hope this endeavor in L.A. can inspire El Pasoans not only for its inherently motivational content, but also to demonstrate that aspiring local talent in content creation is not bound by their surroundings.

“We feel like sometimes we don’t always have the most opportunities in the city, but we do. We have people with grit and talent. And if all I need to do is shed light from an actor in a different city to motivate someone in El Paso, it’ll be worth it,” Powers said.

“We want to invite creators to join us,” Gonzalez said. “It would mean so much to us if we could help other creators and bring them along. Include them in any projects that we’re working on and also help them out with their projects as well. And so we can really create that ecosystem so that El Paso can become the next L.A., can become the next Austin. It can become that city where influencers can all come together and just change the world.”
