MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY — The Elkhart Public Library, Pierre Moran Branch, 2400 Benham Ave., Elkhart, will celebrate MLK Day with a special open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 19 with guest speaker Mike Brown. There will be light refreshments. Brown is an author and served as the first Black Notre Dame leprechaun.
AN EVENING WITH BRENDAN SLOCUMB — As part of the Culturally Speaking Author Series, Brendan Slocumb will be speaking at the St. Joseph County Public Library Community Learning Center, Leighton Auditorium, 305 S. Michigan St., South Bend, from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 21. Slocumb is the author of “The Dark Maestro,” “The Violin Conspiracy” and “Symphony of Secrets.” He will be signing copies of his books and copies will be available for purchase. MAPLE 101 — This program was rescheduled from Jan. 14. Explore the history of maple sugaring and modern syrup-making methods used at Bendix Woods. This is a perfect introduction for those thinking of volunteering in the Sugar House or tapping a tree at home. The presentation is 45 minutes and will be followed by refreshments and a meeting of the Friends of Bendix Woods and Spicer Lake. Maple 101 will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Harvest Room in St. Patrick’s County Park, 50651 Laurel Road, South Bend.

ANNE LINDBERG: AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA — The Moreau Gallery presents the exhibit “At the Edge of the Sea” by Anne Lindberg from Jan. 23 through Feb. 26. On Jan. 22 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., there will be a public lecture with Lindberg in the Vander Vennet Theatre (lower-level Student Center) and the opening reception will be held in the Moreau Gallery from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Lindberg grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and is currently a visual artist living and working in Wilmington, North Carolina. She has exhibited nationally at galleries and museums. Moreau Gallery, Moreau Center for the Arts at Saint Mary’s College in South Bend, is open Mondays-Thursdays 9 to 5 p.m. and Fridays by appointment.
“FAUSTUS” — The Magic Theatre will present the world premiere of “Faustus” by David Mamet. The play centers around the classic tale of a man wrestling with the ultimate stakes of knowledge and ambition. “Faustus” runs Jan. 23, 24, 30, and 31 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. (all times Central) at the Holdcraft Performing Arts Center, 1200 Spring St., Michigan City. MARK SCHULTZ — Mark Schultz is one of the Christian community’s most acclaimed singer-songwriters. He will be performing from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 23 at Blue Gate Music Hall, 195 N. Van Buren St., Shipshewana. Tickets are $35 or $61.20 for buffet/concert and can be purchased at thebluegate.com.
SACRED MUSIC AT NOTRE DAME — DMA student Nico Tjoelker presents “Australian Organ Music in Colonial Context” at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in Reyes Organ and Choral Hall at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. This lecture recital pairs organ music by Australian composers and composers connected to Australia. This is a free but ticketed event. Reserve your ticket through performingarts.nd.edu. Tickets are available for pick-up at the ticket office beginning one hour prior to the performance.
POTAWATOMI ZOO WINTER DAYS — The zoo is open every Saturday and Sunday through March 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Winter days are free for Potawatomi Zoo members and admission for non-members is discounted to $12 for adults and $10 for children. The zoo train will run when weather permits and tickets are $3 per person. Visitors can feed the giraffes inside the giraffe visitor center; tickets are $3 for two pieces of lettuce. Concessions will be available from The Lodge and, when weather permits, also from the Farmhouse Café. The gift shop will be open. The regular zoo season opens on March 28.
OBLATES OF BLUES — One performance only at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24. Experience a night of music at The Acting Ensemble, 602 E. Mishawaka Ave., Mishawaka. Oblates of Blues is a Chicago-style blues band performing original work and cover songs from popular blues artists. As a bonus, the evening will also feature spoken words about the history of the blues. Doors open at 7 p.m. Pay what you can at the door.
JOHN BERRY — Country artist John Berry will perform at Blue Gate Music Hall, 175 N. Van Buren St., Shipshewana on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $34.95 plus fees. Purchase tickets at thebluegate.com.
ADRENALIZE: THE ULTIMATE DEF LEPPARD EXPERIENCE — This tribute band recreates the music that made Def Leppard the iconic and dominant force in arena rock of the ‘80s and beyond. WINTER NIGHTS AT DR. LAWLESS PARK — Head out Jan. 24 and 31 and Feb. 7 and 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. and have some winter fun outdoors. Go tubing (no toboggans or snow boards), cross-country skiing, fat-tire bicycle riding, arts and crafts, star gazing demonstration, fires to warm up by and concessions available for purchase. Admission is $3 per person or two canned goods per person. Winter Nights are weather permitting with snow. Dr. Lawless Park is located at 15122 Monkey Run St., Vandalia.
LUBEZNIK CENTER FOR THE ARTS FREE FAMILY DAY — All families are invited to attend Free Family Day from 1 to 3 p.m. CT Jan. 24. This drop-in event welcomes all ages to create their own artwork inspired by the current exhibit, “LIT! Site-Specific Installations by Maria Burundarena and Luftwerk.” Kids can also participate in a scavenger hunt through LCA’s three galleries. Free snacks will be available. The center is at 101 W. Second St., Michigan City.
SACRED MUSIC AT NOTRE DAME — Nicole Simental will share the majesty of “the king of instruments” by performing on the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center’s Fritts organ at 4 p.m. Jan. 25.
