The Kansas City Royals have made a few minor upgrades to their roster, but nothing that moves the needle. They need a slugging outfielder, but the big fish are unattainable. Their dreams of Kyle Tucker have ended since he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the asking price of Cody Bellinger is just too high for it to be worth it.
To solve their problem, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller proposes the Royals go out and sign three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna’s power would be a great pickup for the Royals and very cost-effective.
Isaac Collins was a solid acquisition in a trade with the Brewers. Lane Thomas is an intriguing buy-low pick up. But the Royals still need at least one more outfielder or designated hitter who can provide actual slugging prowess. We all know Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger are pipe dreams for this small-market club, but DH Marcell Ozuna might be doable on a one-year deal,” Miller wrote.
This past season, Ozuna slashed .232/.355/.400/.756 with 19 doubles, 21 home runs, and 68 RBI in 145 games. He was a top MVP candidate in the year before that, so his age is of no concern. Plus, he’s leagues better than their current left fielder, MJ Melendez.
And, with the Royals being a small-to-mid market team, Ozuna’s projected contract of two-years, $27 million would work perfectly for them. They get two decent years of Ozuna, and if he seems like he’s going downhill faster, they can work a trade for him.
Hopefully, the Royals consider this and get to work on contacting Ozuna’s camp.
