Princess Beatrice decided not to follow a York family tradition when naming her two daughters. The Princess has two daughters with her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, welcoming Sienna into the world in 2021 and Athena – who is celebrating her first birthday today – in 2025.
Beatrice was the name of Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter with Prince Albert; meanwhile, Princess Eugenie’s three names (Eugenie Victoria Helena) are also all connected to the Queen.
Eugenie, although not believed to be as fascinated with Queen Victoria as her mother, followed the naming tradition established by Sarah, naming both her sons with a nod to the royal and members of her family.
When her first son was born in 2021, Eugenie chose the name August, one of Prince Albert’s middle names.
When welcoming her second son into the world in 2023, Eugenie and her husband Jack decided to name him Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank. Ernest was the name of Queen Victoria’s brother-in-law, and a middle name of King George V.
Meanwhile, the middle name Ronnie is a sweet nod to Sarah Ferguson’s father, Major Ronald Ferguson.
Although Beatrice no doubt respects the tradition, she did not follow the same pattern when naming her daughters. Instead, the princess only included one prominent royal relative in their names.
Sienna is also a name with a nod to Beatrice’s husband’s Italian heritage, while Athena is believed to be a nod to Beatrice’s grandfather, Prince Philip, who was born in Greece.
