From “Right Here Waiting” to “Now and Forever,” Richard Marx has built his career on love songs. So, it’s only natural that his latest hit come straight from the heart – of his significant other, Daisy Fuentes.
Fuentes, a Cuban-born model, actress, and the first Latina MTV VJ, has been married to Marx for a decade; the two celebrated 10 years back in December.
In an interview with People magazine, Marx gets candid about writing songs with his muse of a wife, crediting her with penning the lyrics to the song “Magic Hour.”
“I took a long walk one day in my neighborhood,” he started. “I must’ve turned the corner around the block and I had a melody that I couldn’t get out of my head. By the time I came home, I had the whole music written, but no lyrics.”
A month later, the singer was still suffering from writer’s block. Luckily, his wife wasn’t.
“I’m on tour in Australia, Daisy’s with me and we’re laying on the beach and I’m singing, I’m humming,” he said. “She looks at me and she goes, ‘Are you f—ing kidding me? You still don’t have words for that? What is wrong with you?”
He continued, “A couple of minutes go by and she goes, ‘You walked in the door with someone, wasn’t me.’ So I said, ‘Just keep talking,’ and then I would rhyme it. Then she came up with another line, and I would parrot, and within a couple of hours, we went from the beach to the little restaurant and had a glass of wine and we finished the lyrics right then and there. The best lines are her lines.”
Another aspect of life Fuentes has influenced? Recreational drug use. In an interview with The New York Times, Marx shared that his wife is the reason he not only drinks martinis, but tried marijuana and mushrooms for the first time.
“The only reason I took a hit was because I needed both hips replaced and was in a lot of pain,” Marx said. “I had definitely been a prude about drugs. Daisy said, ‘Have you thought about trying pot for the pain?’ I don’t remember whether it made my hips feel better, but I certainly forgot about them.”
“I took mushrooms during the pandemic and I know I’ll do it again,” he added.
