‘Beetlejuice’ actress Catherine O’Hara dies at 71
Catherine O’Hara dies at 71, remembered as the award-winning star known for “Home Alone,” “Beetlejuice” and “Schitt’s Creek.”
“Home Alone” actress Catherine O’Hara was part of a legendarily solid marriage to Emmy-winning production designer Bo Welch, which spanned more than three decades.
The Canadian actress died Friday, Jan. 30, her manager confirmed to People. TMZ was first to report the news.
Variety and Deadline report O’Hara died at home after “a brief illness,” citing her agency CAA. A veteran in the entertainment industry, O’Hara has been one of the most lauded and respected actors of her generation with roles in “Home Alone,” “Beetlejuice” and “Schitt’s Creek,” and she won of two career Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and two Actor Awards (formerly Screen Actors Guild Awards).
Who is Catherine O’Hara’s husband, Bo Welch?
The duo were married April 25, 1992, and frequented award show red carpet throughout each other’s storied careers. Welch famously sat deadpan and hilariously played canned applause on his iPhone sitting on the couch next to O’Hara when virtually accepting her 2021 Golden Globe for “Schitt’s Creek.”
The two met on the set of the classic 1988 comedy “Beetlejuice,” which featured O’Hara as Delia Deetz, Welch’s production design work and director Tim Burton’s matchmaking.
“I was grouching to Tim Burton about how this guy was talking to me all the time and never asking me out,” O’Hara told InStyle in 2018. “We had a break between filming in Los Angeles and on location. And in that time, Tim told Bo that he should ask me out. Our first day of shooting at the house was the day that Bo finally ask me out.”
O’Hara said she still thought about starting her relationship with Welch every time she thought about “Beetlejuice.”
Burton continued contributing, giving the couple a special present after their 1992 wedding.
“Tim gave us an amazing wedding gift, which was a private tour at the Vatican,” O’Hara told host Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the Oct. 31, 2024 podcast Wiser Than Me. “Somebody had given (Burton) the gift, and he’d been blown away, so he passed it on… So this lovely priest or cardinal took us all around the Vatican.”
O’Hara relocated to Los Angeles where Welch was based.
“I moved to L.A. to be with him,” she told The New Yorker in 2019. “Yeah, I moved for love.”
Welch has been nominated for four Oscars and two Emmy Awards in his career. O’Hara won two Emmy Awards, nominated 10 times.
Who are Catherine O’Hara’s kids?
O’Hara and Welch have two grown sons, Matthew and Luke Welch. Matthew was born in 1994, two years after the couple married, and Luke was born in 1997. The sons both work behind the scenes in Hollywood, like their father, in set dressing and construction. Both worked on “Schitt’s Creek.”
Speaking to Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2024, O’Hara said of her sons professions: “My husband is a production designer so he gave a little push for sure. They’re both doing really well at it, so I’m happy.”
The children have always had their parents’ sense of humor.
“Matthew and Luke, they’re very funny, and we encourage it,” O’Hara told the Toronto Star in 2007. “The older one does Warner’s cartoon bits, really old-fashioned, cheap-ass funny vaudeville stuff. And the little one does word play.”
