Elton John calls it a sad day for the music industry after the passing of beloved R&B star D’Angelo.
The music legend joins a growing list of celebrities paying tribute to the “Lady” hitmaker.
D’Angelo, known for his progressive funk, hip-hop, soul, and R&B, as well as acclaimed albums Brown Sugar, Voodoo, and Black Messiah, died Tuesday at 51.
On social media, the British singer-songwriter openly grieved, reflecting on D’Angelo’s groundbreaking music and lasting contributions.
Elton John also praised D’Angelo, calling him the “inventor of Neo Soul” and celebrating his transformative influence on modern R&B.
“So sad to hear the news of D’Angelo’s passing. He was inspirational. His 3 albums are perfection. He was the investor of Neo Soul and has a huge influence to so many artists. A sad day. May his music live on forever,” he posted on Instagram Story, along with a black and white photo of the late singer.
Besides the “Rocket Man” singer, fellow icons like Beyoncé penned a touching tribute, celebrating a career that touched countless lives.
“Rest in peace, Michael Eugene Archer, known to the world of music as the inimitable D’Angelo. We thank you for your beautiful music, your voice and your proficiency on the piano, your artistry,” she posted on her website, adding how the singer pioneered neo-soul and “transformed the rhythm and blues forever.”
The sad news of D’Angelo’s passing was confirmed by his family, who revealed that he had been battling pancreatic cancer prior to his death.
“After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025,” the statement reads as cited by ABC News.
Additionally, the family has requested that the public “respect our privacy” while they navigate this “difficult time” in their lives.
“We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind,” a representative for the D’Angelo Estate mentioned in a statement, as noted by People. “We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time, but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
