A 52-year-old letter from King Charles thanking a friend for the “greatest possible fun” in Acapulco has emerged ahead of an auction next month. Written in 1974 by a 25-year-old Charles while serving in the Royal Navy, the letter sees the monarch reminisce about having “enormous fun” at the lavish Las Brisas hotel in the Mexican resort city.
Charles wrote: “Your party on the last night was the greatest possible fun. I hope we didn’t behave too roughly in the swimming pool or destroy anything as a result.” The five-page letter was addressed to American hotelier Col Frank Brandstetter, who owned Las Brisas.
The monarch told him: “I am afraid it has taken me an uncommonly long time to write and thank you for all you did to make our visit to Acapulco such enormous fun.
“The delay is indicative of the extent to which I have been savouring the happy memories of those all too brief days and the kindness which you displayed to all of us at Las Brisas.”
The young prince spoke of how “impressed” he was with the luxurious hotel and was keen to explore its famous individual pools off each room.
He said: “Needless to say, I was suitably impressed and awed by the brilliant organisation which obviously stemmed from the source of power at the top of the mountain!”
The letter was dated April 3, 1974, and addressed from “the Caribbean”.
The auction by RR Auction will take place on February 11, with the bids starting at £145 ($200).
