Authorities have shared more information about the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie‘s mom, Nancy Guthrie, including how the Today show star’s own safety might be affected.
“I don’t think there’s an active threat [to the public],” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters in a press conference on Monday, February 2. “We’re going to canvass that neighborhood, maybe there’s a prowler [that’s] been seen around. There’s a lot of work still to do. We don’t have any indication that the public is still in danger.”
When asked whether Savannah, 54, has been threatened at all after her mother was reported missing, Nanos confirmed law enforcement has spoken to her.
“She has a security team that’s been in touch with us throughout the night. We’re not gonna dismiss any angles for sure, but right now, immediately, we don’t know of anything like that,” he added, noting that Savannah is in Arizona.
News broke on Sunday, February 1, that a family member called 911 to report Nancy, 84, as missing. She was last seen on Saturday, January 31. Panos emphasized during Monday’s news conference that Nancy is “as sharp as a tack” when it comes to her mental awareness but has physical limitations due to age.
Panos also noted that search and rescue efforts have been put on pause as authorities instead begin to investigate the incident as a crime.
“All of the family has been very cooperative with us. They’re working with us, they’re staying in touch with us. They have complete access to anybody in this department,” the sheriff said. “Our hearts go out to them. This is their mom.”
According to Panos, it’s unlikely Nancy left her home on her own accord. “She is mobile, it’s just a challenge for her,” Panos explained. “She couldn’t walk 50 yards by herself.”
“This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments, has some physical ailments, is in need of medication,” he added. “Medication that if she doesn’t have in 24 hours, it could be fatal. So we make a plea to anyone that knows anyone about this — who has seen something, heard something — to contact us. Call 911. We don’t need another bad, tragic ending. We need some help.”

With Nancy’s whereabouts still unknown, Savannah was noticeably absent from the Today show on Monday morning. Sheinelle Jones instead joined Craig Melvin during the first hour.
“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” Savannah noted in a statement shared during Monday’s broadcast. “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”
Jenna Bush Hager later addressed Nancy’s disappearance on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle, telling viewers Nancy requires daily medication “for survival.”
“We love Nancy, I know her personally. … We are thinking of our dearest, dearest Savannah and her whole family right now,” Bush Hager, 44, said on Monday as she held back tears. “Our prayers obviously go out to Savannah.”
