INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Wolf Entertainment has launched its first children’s media project with the scripted mystery podcast Patrick Picklebottom, which has reached nearly 200,000 downloads since its debut in late October. The podcast is based on the bestselling children’s book series by author Mr. Jay and was developed by the creative team behind “Law & Order” franchise.
The series marks Wolf Entertainment’s expansion into kids and family programming. The company is best known for adult crime procedurals, and CEO Dick Wolf said the move was a natural extension of its long-standing focus on storytelling and mystery.
Mr. Jay, a former marketing entrepreneur turned children’s author, created the character after visiting a school in Michigan. While speaking to students about perseverance, he noticed their enthusiasm for video games contrasted with a lack of interest in reading. During his flight home, he wrote “Picklebottom and the Penny Book”, a story about a young boy who buys his favorite book for a penny and wants nothing more than to go home and read, despite distractions from electronic devices. The story emphasizes creativity and imagination over reliance on technology.
Jay said he initially overlooked the opportunity to work with Wolf Entertainment after receiving an email from executive producer Stephen Michael, assuming it was not legitimate. After a friend in the industry confirmed the offer, Jay learned that Wolf had personally read the book and believed its mystery-driven storytelling mirrored the structure of “Law & Order” for a younger audience.
The collaboration has allowed the characters to evolve while staying true to the foundation of the original books. Jay said the production team expanded the world of Picklebottom while maintaining the core themes and character dynamics he created.
The series targets middle-grade listeners through mystery-solving and deduction, and its reception has exceeded expectations. Jay said feedback from both children and parents has been overwhelmingly positive, with young listeners frequently requesting additional episodes.
Jay lives in New Jersey with his wife, Amanda, and their children, Bria, Oakland and Weston, who inspire many of his stories. His other books include Ricky, the Rock That Couldn’t Roll.
A second book in the” Patrick Picklebottom” series is in development and scheduled for release June 1, 2026. The book will feature 10 to 12 chapters and introduce a longer, more complex mystery aimed at older readers. A spinoff series titled The Cobblepot Chronicles is also in early development and will center on Claire, Picklebottom’s best friend.
