The reporter’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, has been missing since Sunday morning. Guthrie, who is 84 years old, lives in Tucson, Ariz., and local police are investigating the possibility that she was taken against her will.
Savannah Guthrie was scheduled to be the lead host and commentator for NBC’s 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy but has been away from the network as she and her family deal with the investigation.

Nancy Guthrie has been a reported missing person since Feb., 3 at Noon. The 84-year-old lives alone in her home outside Tuscon, Ariz.
Authorities searched Nancy’s home and found personal belongings such as her wallet and cell phone as well as her car, but Nancy was nowhere to be found. Although the investigation began as a missing persons/search and rescue mission, it has since shifted to a crime scene investigation.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters on Monday that they suspect Nancy was taken from her residence against her will. Nanos added that Nancy dealt with extensive mobility issues, and that her family stated she couldn’t walk more than 50 yards.
“I believe she was abducted, yes,” Nanos said via CBS News. “She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”
Authorities have set up a tip line for anyone with information regarding Nancy’s whereabouts to provide it. The Sheriff’s Department is also offering up to a $2,500 reward for photos, videos or intel that might lead to the arrest of the person or people involved in her disappearance.
“We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” Nanos told reporters. “We believe now after we’ve processed that crime scene that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime, and we’re asking the community’s help.”
The Los Angeles Timesreported that blood was found at the crime scene.

Guthrie was scheduled to be the lead commentator for Friday afternoon’s opening ceremony, but she remains in Arizona with her family. Savannah has been absent from the “Today Show” since Monday. Feb. 2.

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing by her family after she did not show up for her weekly church service on Sunday morning. She was last seen at her home in Tucson by Savannah’s siblings around 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
Sheriff Nanos stressed to reporters Monday afternoon that Nancy “is of sound mind” and has no cognitive issues, leading investigators to rule out the possibility that she wandered off on her own. Nanos added that Nancy relies on daily medication that could be life-threatening if not taken.

Given her mobility issues, authorities believe that Guthrie was taken against her will.
“At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly [in the] middle of the night,” Pima County department spokesperson Kevin Adger told The Los Angeles Times in a statement on Monday afternoon. “Detectives are looking into a possible kidnapping or abduction.”
Nancy’s home did have security cameras installed, which authorities are in the process of downloading. Sheriff Nanos encouraged Nancy’s neighbors to check their security cameras for any unusual activity.
“Keep looking. You never know what you’ll see,” Nanos said. “Maybe it’s just a pair of headlights. But if you see something that just doesn’t seem right in that neighborhood, please let us know. We can come and download all your digital evidence and take a look at it ourselves.”

The 2026 Winter Olympics will officially start with the opening ceremony on Friday, Feb. 6. But since the Winter Olympics have so many events, sports will begin as early as Wednesday, Feb. 4.
