Comedian Whitney Cummings is pulling back the curtain on a joke about President Donald Trump that was cut from her new special.
“Not only did I have to cut a joke in rehearsal, and then the joke I did — I ended on, ‘Donald Trump couldn’t make it tonight. He got caught in sex traffic.’ It stayed in and then they said, ‘We would like to cut it out,’” Cummings, 46, said on the Saturday, July 18, episode of her “Good For You” podcast. “I’m going to be very careful with how I say this because the people at the venue have been amazing. They don’t want to silence anyone. It is true that their boss is Donald Trump. So they did their job.”
She continued, “I was presented with a tricky conundrum. I just don’t know if I did the right thing or not. It was very clear to me that they would lose their jobs … This is for broadcast, the joke was already leaked by someone who was in the audience, journalists or something.”
Cummings performed her set at Bill Maher’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony at the Kennedy Center on June 28. Nearly one month later, the broadcast from the event is set to stream on Netflix Tuesday, July 21 — and the joke will be omitted.
“They said, ‘We need to cut it from the broadcast,’” Cummings continued on Saturday. “And I’m like, ‘Well, it’s already out there. Who cares?’ And they’re like, ‘He will sue you.’ Which is like, I don’t buy it, number one. Number two, he might.”
Cummings went on to share that it was ironic she had to cut the joke at the ceremony for the Mark Twain Prize, which she called “the only time that you shouldn’t get censored because it is about comedians using humor to criticize our elected officials.”
“So I was in this jam where I was like, ‘I need to fight for this joke because it’s the Mark Twain Prize and this is the time I feel like I have to. But also, I don’t want anybody losing their job,’” she said. “But if it’s just about him suing me, I was like, ‘OK.’ I mean, I’d have to fly to D.C., which is kind of annoying. But I would win.”
She continued, “I felt very strongly that I would win because I’m not accusing of anything underage, sex traffic — you can traffic women in their 50s. Also, it’s in Washington, D.C. There’s a lot of traffic in D.C. because politicians live there. There’s a lot of sex trafficking that happens in D.C. I’m sure it’s sometimes in cars. Trump might just be stuck in the physical traffic. That is what I meant. I don’t know what you guys are talking about.”

In response to Cummings’ podcast episode, a Netflix spokesperson told Variety, “While it’s our preference not to cut jokes from anyone’s set, The Kennedy Center has the contractual right to do so.”
Cummings, for her part, also spoke out on Tuesday, via X, writing, “I was super clear that Netflix did not cut anything from my Mark Twain prize set. Netflix always supports comedy and comics. Quit spreading rumors ya weirdos.”
