Now, I know that Elton John and David Furnish aren’t technically members of the royal family, but let’s face it, they are pretty damn close.
They are also co-defendants with Prince Harry in his legal suit against the publisher of the Mail, alleging years of unlawful information-gathering. So I’ve decided that The Royalist simply must cover David Furnish’s extraordinary witness statement and appearance in the High Court today.
Most of the contents of his witness statement are contextualized by the allegations that the Mail listened in to their conversations and used unlawfully gathered information to produce articles about them.
Furnish describes the alleged use of private investigators, phone tapping and landline bugging as an “abomination” and accuses the publisher of years of intrusion into his and Elton’s private lives. He says the couple were left feeling violated when they realised how much of their supposedly private world had somehow made its way into print.
But I have to say, I am slightly more fascinated by the amazing tidbits that were dropped in the course of the witness statement, the little details that give an insight into their crazy, crazy lives.
Perhaps my favourite detail is that when they told Karl Lagerfeld that he couldn’t bring a camera to their wedding, Lagerfeld cancelled and refused to come. This was being told in the context of Furnish saying that he was very protective about his privacy and basically saying: I’m so protective about my privacy that I wouldn’t even allow photographs to be taken at our wedding.
