As the search into Nancy Guthrie’s mysterious disappearance continues, one vital clue in an alleged ransom letter could lead investigators closer to the suspect.
Today Show host Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother went missing near Tuscan, Arizona, on January 31. While the case began as a missing persons report, it has since escalated into major criminal investigation, with authorities believing she was abducted from her home in her sleep.
One essential clue that could help investigators narrow down the potential culprit is the fact that the news outlet described the letter as being “very well written” and that they have spent time crafting it. Due to this, the media outlet speculated that the kidnapper is likely someone who is well educated.
Despite recieving the ransom letter, the news outlet said that they were not provided any “proof of life.” This comes as health concerns have since been raised as Nancy had significant mobility limitations, requires daily medication for cardiac issues, and uses a pacemaker.
While there have been no named suspects yet, the FBI has confirmed that they are aware of the “new message regarding Nancy Guthrie.” In a new X post, FBI Arizona added that they are working with the Pima County Sheiff’s Department and are “actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity.”
The news outlet went on to speculate where Nancy’s whereabouts could be, TMZ suggested it could be somewhere near Arizona as kidnappers would be unable to board a commercial aircraft without using her ID. The news outlet predicted that she is likely in Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas or Oklahoma.
Despite reports of this alleged ransom note, police have not confirmed its authenticity or contents. After the news of the ransom note circulated, FBI Special Agent Heith Janke, told press during a briefing that there were some people falsely claiming to be the kidnappers.
Janke said, “To those impostors who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation. We will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions. We have made one arrest related to an imposter ransom demand.”
Savannah and her two siblings have since issued a plea on their Instagram for anyone with information about their mother’s whereabouts to reach out to them.
In their video, the 54-year-old television personality said, “We live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know, without a doubt, that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”
The government has also put out a $50,000 reward for information that may lead to the recovery of Nancy or the arrest and conviction of “anyone involved in her disappearance.”
