As the search continues for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, investigators are facing growing public scrutiny after confirming there are still no identified suspects nearly a week into the case
Now, a former police detective is shedding light on one phrase that often raises eyebrows in high-profile investigations – “everyone is a suspect.”
Officials believe she was abducted from her home near Tucson, Arizona, over the weekend. They also said she is without critical medication, raising urgent concerns about her health.
The FBI has since joined the investigation and announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to Guthrie’s recovery. Despite the increased resources and attention, authorities have not named any confirmed suspects.
That lack of clarity has sparked speculation online and among observers following the case closely. But according to Morgan Wright, CEO and Founder of the National Center for Open and Unsolved Cases and a former police detective, the phrase “everyone is a suspect” should not be read as a sign that investigators are floundering.
He explained that the phrase is often misunderstood by the public, especially in emotionally charged cases involving missing persons and possible abductions.
“When investigators state ‘everyone is a suspect,’ it’s about signaling investigative discipline rather than exposing evidentiary weakness,” Wright said. “Early in a complex case, I would want to keep the hypothesis space open and eliminate possibilities systematically rather than anchor prematurely to a narrative that is later unfounded (think DC sniper case – everyone looking for a white panel van when it was a blue Chevy Caprice).”
According to Wright, such statements are meant to preserve the integrity of the investigation, not suggest a lack of direction. “This statement doesn’t mean they lack leads or are directionless,” he said. “Rather, it tells me that they are protecting the integrity of the process by allowing physical evidence, timelines, and behavioral constraints to narrow the field.”
Wright added that the ultimate goal of investigators is often misunderstood. “In short, it reflects methodical investigation, not hidden meaning,” he said. “The goal is to eliminate people as suspects, starting with close family and working your way out.”
Authorities have already confirmed several troubling details surrounding Guthrie’s disappearance. Blood found on her porch was confirmed to belong to her, and a front door camera is missing from the home. Investigators also revealed that another camera detected motion around 2 a.m. Sunday, around the same time Guthrie’s pacemaker last pinged her phone.
In addition, Guthrie’s son issued a public appeal Thursday directed at potential captors. In a video message, he urged anyone holding his mother to make contact, saying, “We want to hear from you.”
Officials also acknowledged the existence of purported ransom notes, though they have not been verified. A second deadline mentioned in those notes is set for Monday, according to the FBI.
