Meghan Markle first started dating Prince Harry 10 years ago this summer, and her life has changed a great deal since then. While she is now well aware of the rules that come with the Royal Family, whether that be the correct way to greet a senior royal or the type of behaviour expected, this was reportedly not the case at first.
This is something Meghan, 44, once admitted herself as she claimed she did not know she would have to curtsy to Queen Elizabeth II when meeting her. This was something the Duchess revealed in the 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan, as she said she thought Harry was joking.
Recalling her first curtsy to the late Queen, Meghan said: “I curtsied like I was… ‘Pleased to meet you, Your Majesty’. It was so intense.”
Speaking to Vanity Fair about the type of person that Meghan is, fashion and cultural commentator Tom Fitzgerald said: “Meghan is the type of woman who would check a menu out online before going to a restaurant to pick what she was going to eat.
“So the idea that she didn’t know she was supposed to curtsy for the [late] Queen, I just didn’t find it particularly believable, because [based on] everything she ever told us about herself, I cannot imagine that she went into meeting the Royal Family completely cold, with no research whatsoever.”
Meghan also claimed that she knew very little about her now husband Harry before meeting him, however, this was debunked by authors Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie in their unauthorised biography of Harry and Meghan called Finding Freedom.
When writing about Harry and Meghan’s first date in 2016, the authors wrote: “Naturally, both participants in this blind date did their homework with a thorough Google search.”
They then welcomed their son Prince Archie into the world in 2019, followed by Princess Lilibet in 2021.
