Turning Point USA‘s All-American Halftime Show is will air to compete with the Apple Music event during Super Bowl LX on Sunday, Feb. 8.
The conservative political group, co-founded by Charlie Kirk, says the alternative will celebrate “American faith, family and freedom.”
Kid Rock will headline, and there will be performances from country singers Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice and Gabby Barrett.
Turning Point vowed to host its own show last year after it was announced that Bad Bunny would headline the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.
The Puerto Rican singer is one of the world’s leading performers. He tops global streaming charts and recently made Grammy history with an all-Spanish album of the year. Most of his catalog is in Spanish.
The NFL has tapped several Grammy winners to perform for the big game. Green Day will play before the game starts. Charlie Puth will perform the national anthem as part of the opening ceremony, and Brandi Carlile will sing “America the Beautiful.” Coco Jones will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often called the Black national anthem.
Here’s what we know about the performers for the Turning Point All-American Halftime Show and where to watch on TV or via streaming services.
Why is Turning Point USA hosting a halftime show?
Turning Point spokesman, Andrew Kolvet said in a release that their presentation is a “no agenda” approach to entertainment that will fun for the whole family.
“We’re approaching this show like David and Goliath. Competing with the pro football machineand a global pop superstar is almost impossible… or is it?” Kid Rock said in a Turning Point news release. “He’s said he’s having a dance party, wearing a dress, and singing in Spanish? Cool. We plan to play great songs for folks who love America.”
The dress comment seems to be founded in a viral rumor. Fact checks can’t find anywhere that Bad Bunny said he’d wear a dress, though he has in the past. The false quote quickly spread across the right-wing social media sphere. However, the musician is known for being supportive of LGBTQIA+ issues and his unique fashion sense.
TMZ has reported that production workers say he’s not wearing a gown. They did not, however, say what he would be wearing.
In a Fox News interview, Brice said for him, it’s about celebrating music and football with friends, not taking a stand against Bad Bunny.
Brice said he wasn’t asked to play the Super Bowl halftime show, “but I was asked to do this and be a part of something that I believe in that I’ve grown.” He went on to say that Kirk wanted everyone to have a microphone.
