Plans are in the works for a new, annual summer music festival in Burlington, complete with a new name.

It’s not just a name change, it’s a completely new festival operated by a new production company.

The new Lakeshore Music and Art Festival will take place over Father’s Day weekend at Spencer Smith Park, as the sound of music fest did but it will be a two-day event as opposed to four.

However, the event will remain free.

It’ll be centered around all things Canadian, including local and Indigenous artists and local vendors.

“The community was really clear. They want us to support Canada, support homegrown talent, support our incredible artists that we have here, many of whom got their start here at the Sound of Music Festival and went on to incredible things. You know, Walk Off The Earth, Finger Eleven, bands like that have started here,” says Marianne Meed Ward, the Mayor of Burlington.

MRG Live is taking over the reins after Burlington City Council decided to terminate its funding for the Sound of Music Festival.

But Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward says there is an element to the festival she would like to see kept alive.

“They currently aren’t planning a parade and that is actually how the Sound of Music started way back when, over 45-years-ago, it was a marching band parade. I am going to ask them if they could add that element. I know that it is very beloved by many people in the community. Hopefully there is a way to bring that back.”

MRG is set to present its plans for its inaugural festival Monday morning at Burlington’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
