Meghan McCain sparked backlash from her fellow conservatives for praising Bad Bunny’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday.
“I’m sorry but I just genuinely question your taste level if you didn’t enjoy the Bad Bunny halftime show,” McCain wrote on X. “And everything in life doesn’t have to be ruined with politics.”
McCain’s remarks come as a break from other conservatives who were outraged by the Latin artist, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, singing entirely in Spanish.
President Donald Trump called Bad Bunny’s performance a “‘slap in the face’ to our Country,” and Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) claimed it depicted “gay pornography,” going as far as to request the Energy and Commerce Committee to launch a formal inquiry into the NFL and NBC.
Right-wing pages on X bashed McCain’s defense of the performance, some making comments about her body and others criticizing the dance.
“The fact that the NFL chose Bad Bunny made it political,” one comment with over a thousand likes read.
“He ruined it with politics to start with.. also I’m pretty sure the majority of Americans watch football in English. The halftime show should reflect that…” another X user’s comment with hundreds of likes read.
“A cross dresser who mumbles in Spanish is better taste than what they did at the TPUSA halftime show? You’re not serious,” another comment read.
“People not liking music that they can’t understand the lyrics to, delivered by an artist that doesn’t share their values, doesn’t mean they have bad taste,” another X user wrote. “You’ve been outside of AZ and hanging out in the beltway for too long.”
Despite the all the backlash, Bad Bunny’s show was well received by many others online who appreciated the music, accompanied by scenes that paid tribute to Puerto Rican culture and displayed messages like “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”
