Savannah Guthrie is likely trying to “dispel rumors” with her videos to her social media followers amid the search for her 84-year-old mom, Nancy Guthrie, an expert has observed.
As of Wednesday, February 11, the eleventh day of Nancy’s disappearance, the FBI and local law enforcement still have no leads on suspects, but they have retrieved surveillance footage of a subject. Meanwhile, the Today Show host, 54, has kept her Instagram followers updated and even sent potential kidnappers desperate pleas in a series of videos alongside her older sister Annie Guthrie and older brother Camron Guthrie.
Amid the Guthrie family’s crisis, public relations expert Grayce McCormick at Lightfinder Public Relations has told The Daily Express US that this isn’t a “media moment,” but a way for Savannah to “stay transparent, dispel rumors, or steer the story to avoid harmful speculation.” It comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.
McCormick said, “When a family member is missing, the first thing any PR professional will say is that this is not a ‘media moment.’ It is a personal crisis.
“The main focus should always be the family’s safety, cooperation with law enforcement, and respect for everyone’s dignity.”
The PR expert added, “Usually, a team works closely with the authorities and the family to ensure that any public statements do not impede the search or investigation.
“When it comes to communication, the optimal approach is usually to be caring and brief. Acknowledge how serious the situation is, request privacy, and share only what is necessary or helpful to the public.”
McCormick explained that if someone like Savannah posts videos, “it might be to stay transparent, dispel rumors, or steer the story to avoid harmful speculation.”
The expert added, “But it’s important to remember that grief and uncertainty don’t follow any set PR rules. To help stop rumors while keeping things simple, set a clear schedule for updates.
“For example, saying, ‘We will share confirmed facts every 24 hours’ can help prevent misinformation and keep the public informed.”
McCormick concluded, “In the end, the best advice is to act with care for people, not just appearances.”
On Saturday, February 7, Savannah and her siblings released their second video in which they directly addressed their mother’s potential kidnappers and urgently pleaded, “We will pay.”
“We received your message, and we understand,” Savannah said in the video posted to her Instagram account, sitting alongside older sister Annie Guthrie and older brother Camron Guthrie.
“We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
In their first video, shared on Wednesday, February 4, Savannah said they “need to know without a doubt that she’s alive and that you have her.” She also noted that her mother is in “constant pain” and needs her medication to survive.
On Monday, February 10, the FBI released new surveillance photos and videos of a subject in the disappearance of Nancy.
The new evidence, obtained from a Nest camera at Nancy’s home in the Catalina Foothills community, located just north-east of Tucson, Arizona, shows a person who appears to be wearing a mask and carrying a backpack or tools.
The person in the surveillance videos is considered a “subject” in the investigation, NBC said, and the FBI hopes that the public can help gather more information about this individual.
The pictures of the subject were released on FBI Director Kash Patel’s X account. He wrote, “Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors – including the removal of recording devices.
“The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems. Working with our partners – as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance. Anyone with information, please contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit http://tips.fbi.gov.”
Minutes after law enforcement released the new videos taken from the front porch of Nancy’s home, Savannah reposted them on her Instagram account with a message from her family.
“We believe she is still alive. Bring her home,” the caption said. She later added in an additional post, “Someone out there recognizes this person.”
