American rock band Fishbone enjoyed commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s in their major-label years, before settling in to a longer-term independent career.
Now they have turned to Kickstarter to fund a new album, while giving fans an insight into the challenges that have led to that decision.
“Fishbone has always been a touring band. That’s where we earn our living, and it’s what we love doing. The reality is: touring is expensive,” they explain in their pitch.
“When a tour ends, success looks like this: Everyone gets paid (band + crew — even when it’s underpaid). Travel and expenses are covered. Vendors get paid. The tour breaks even. That’s a win — but it also means there’s nothing left to bank for what comes next.”
That being footing the upfront costs for studio time, engineering, mixing and mastering, travel and accommodation, artwork and vinyl/CD manufacturing.
Hence Kickstarter, with a campaign that’s already well on its way to hitting its $36,696 goal to record a new album and upgrade the band’s touring gear. Cookery and guitar lessons with band members on Zoom are among the rewards.
