Prince Harry struggled to contain his emotions while delivering an unplanned address to grieving families pursuing legal action against major technology corporations following the loss of loved ones.

The Duke of Sussex’s appearance coincided with a gathering of parents in Los Angeles as a groundbreaking lawsuit commenced, scrutinizing whether Instagram and YouTube negatively impact youth mental health. The plaintiffs argue these social media platforms employ deliberately addictive features – allegations that attorneys representing Meta, the parent company, dispute.

During his remarks to the assembled parents, Harry’s voice wavered with emotion as he told them: “None of you should be here. Thank you for doing everything that you’ve done. Thank you for telling your stories over and over again. Truth, justice and accountability: those are the three things that will come from this.”

The moment reflects ongoing concerns from both Harry and his wife, Meghan, regarding social media’s effects on younger generations. In footage aired on BBC Breakfast, the Duke further addressed the families: “We’ve said time and time again that this is a David versus Goliath situation.

“I’ve been in some similar situations myself – vastly different – but when you’re sitting in court and if you have that feeling of just overwhelming emotion, because you can’t believe that the people on the other side are saying what they’re saying – that by the very nature of defending what they’re defending, the lies that they are stating, is devaluing life, is devaluing your children’s lives – if that brings stuff up for you, it is totally normal.”

At an event in New York last year, dubbed Project Healthy Minds, Harry also asserted that the digital realm has “fundamentally changed how we experience reality”.

Meghan, on the other hand, discussed their charity, the Archewell Foundation, and its efforts to support families impacted by the harms of social media, emphasizing that healing thrives on shared experiences rather than isolation.

Harry, addressing the pervasive issue of mental health, stated: “These are not separate problems for separate people. “They are interlocking injuries to our global community. Mental health is shaped by public health, foreign policy, climate policy, corporate design, and economic choices.

Too often, decisions made by a few powerful actors ripple across the planet and into every aspect of our lives. ” He noted that the digital landscape has “fundamentally changed how we experience reality – young people exposed to relentless comparison, harassment, misinformation and an attention economy designed to keep us scrolling at the expense of sleep and real human contact.

“In a separate development last November, the duo also put their names to an open letter advocating for restrictions on AI superintelligence, joined by numerous celebrities and political figures. The letter specifically targets technology companies such as Google, OpenAI and Meta, which are reportedly developing artificial intelligence systems intended to outperform humans across multiple tasks.

The letter, which counts among its signatories Stephen Fry, musician Will.i.am, Sir Richard Branson and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, calls for halting the advancement of such AI until “there is broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably, and strong public buy-in.

“Harry included a personal statement in the letter, writing: “The future of AI should serve humanity, not replace it. I believe the true test of progress will be not how fast we move, but how wisely we steer. There is no second chance.”
